Two ways to convert, and which one to trust

Why 100 yards is not a track event anymore

The NCAA ran its last 100 yard championship in 1975 and the rest of US track went metric around the same time. The national high school record, 9.30 by Houston McTear, has stood since that same year because nobody has contested the distance seriously since. If you are searching this, you are almost certainly coming from football, a youth league, or an old family record. If you came to this from football, the 40-yard dash averages by age are the closer comparison.

The flat 0.9 second rule, and where it breaks

Add 0.9 seconds to a 100 yard time and you get a usable 100 meter estimate. It is calibrated for a sprinter running about 12 seconds flat for 100 meters. Faster than that and you are adding too much. Slower and you are not adding enough, because a 13 second athlete covers the extra 8.56 meters more slowly than an 11 second athlete does. Where you sit at a single age is easier to read off the 100m benchmarks for a 14-year-old.

The better method: use your own top speed

The 8.56 meters you are missing gets run at close to your maximum velocity, not your average. Divide 8.56 by your top speed in meters per second and you get an honest add-on. Elite men land near 0.73 seconds. High school varsity boys land near 0.89. Twelve year olds land closer to 1.10. The 100m benchmarks those conversions run off are in the 100m times by age and level.

How to convert a 100 yard dash time to 100 meters

Two methods. The first takes five seconds, the second is more accurate at the ends of the range.

  1. 01

    Start with a clean time

    Use a fully automatic time if you have one. Hand-held sprint times run roughly 0.24 seconds fast, and most youth and football timing is hand-held, so correct for that before you convert anything.

  2. 02

    Quick method: add 0.9 seconds

    A 10.8 for 100 yards becomes about 11.7 for 100 meters. This holds best when the yard time sits between about 10.5 and 11.5, which is a solid high school varsity sprinter.

  3. 03

    Better method: scale by distance

    Multiply the 100 yard time by 1.0936, which is 100 divided by 91.44. This assumes you hold one average speed the whole way, so it runs about a tenth slow for trained sprinters who are still near top speed at the line.

    Best method: use the missing 8.56 meters

    Estimate your top speed in meters per second, then divide 8.56 by it. A boy topping out at 9.6 meters per second adds 0.89 seconds. A youth athlete topping out at 7.7 adds 1.11.

    Sanity check against a known mark

    Asafa Powell ran 9.07 for 100 yards and 9.72 for 100 meters over his career, a gap of 0.65 seconds. If your conversion produces something wilder than that at the fast end, redo it.

91.44 meters. That is 8.56 meters short of a 100 meter race, which is where the whole conversion problem comes from.
How much slower is 100 meters than 100 yards?
Between about 0.7 and 1.1 seconds. Elite sprinters add the least, because they cover the extra 8.56 meters fastest. Youth athletes add the most.
What is a good 100 yard dash time by age?
Roughly 12.4 to 14.4 seconds for a boy of 10 or 11, 11.0 to 12.4 as a high school freshman, and 10.5 to 11.3 for a varsity sprinter. Girls sit about half a second back before puberty and closer to a full second back by varsity.
Is the 100 yard dash still run in track?
Not at any sanctioned level in US track. The NCAA dropped it in 1975. It survives in football testing, youth field days, and the occasional novelty race.
