Optimal pacing pattern
Elite 400m runners often run close to even, something like a 50/52 split between the first and second 200, regardless of their total time. That two-second gap is the target, not a coincidence, since it reflects roughly how much speed the body can bank early without paying for it later. Go out faster than that and the front half feels great right up until the wall hits around 300 meters. Go out slower and you never make up enough ground to matter.
