[01]Official vs Unofficial Visits

The two kinds of visit

Unofficial visits

On an unofficial visit you pay your own way. You can take as many as you want, at almost any time, and they are a great low-pressure way to see campuses early and meet coaches. Most of your visits will be unofficial.

Official visits

An official visit is paid for, within limits, by the program, and you are limited in how many you can take. They usually come later, once a coach is seriously interested, and include things like meals, lodging, and a hosted tour.

When to take each

Use unofficial visits early and widely to narrow your list. Save official visits for the programs genuinely recruiting you, since they signal real interest on both sides and there are a limited number to go around.
