An official visit is paid for, within limits, by the program, and you are limited in how many you can take. They usually come later, once a coach is seriously interested, and include things like meals, lodging, and a hosted tour.
Use unofficial visits early and widely to narrow your list. Save official visits for the programs genuinely recruiting you, since they signal real interest on both sides and there are a limited number to go around.
