The decathlon: ten events, two days
Men's decathlon runs 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400m on day one, then 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1500m on day two. The order is fixed by World Athletics rules and rewards genuine breadth: a decathlete who is merely average across ten events beats one who is brilliant at three and weak everywhere else. Pole vault and the 1500m, both absent from the heptathlon, are usually what separates a good decathlon score from a great one.
