[01]Decathlon vs Heptathlon

How the two compare

The decathlon: ten events, two days

Men's decathlon runs 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400m on day one, then 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1500m on day two. The order is fixed by World Athletics rules and rewards genuine breadth: a decathlete who is merely average across ten events beats one who is brilliant at three and weak everywhere else. Pole vault and the 1500m, both absent from the heptathlon, are usually what separates a good decathlon score from a great one.

The heptathlon: seven events, two days

Women's heptathlon runs 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, and 200m on day one, then long jump, javelin, and 800m on day two, the same two-day structure with three fewer events. There is no pole vault, no discus, and no 400m in the heptathlon, and the meet closes with an 800m instead of a 1500m. World Athletics has trialed a women's decathlon with its own record book, but it has not replaced the heptathlon at any championship level.

Scoring, and who actually competes in each

Both events convert every performance into points using the same style of scoring tables, so a big mark in one event cannot carry a weak field the way it might in a single-event meet. The decathlon is a men's event at essentially every level, high school, college, and international; the heptathlon is the women's equivalent. A handful of women have posted decathlon marks outside championship competition, but for scoring purposes and titles that count, the gender split still holds.

Decathlon vs Heptathlon FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

What is the difference between the decathlon and heptathlon?
The decathlon is the men's ten-event competition over two days; the heptathlon is the women's seven-event competition over two days. Both reward all-around ability.
What events are in the decathlon and heptathlon?
The decathlon has ten: 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m, 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1500m. The heptathlon has seven: 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin, and 800m.
How are the multi-events scored?
Each performance is converted to points using standard scoring tables, and the totals decide the winner, so consistency across every event matters more than one big mark.
Is there a women's decathlon?
World Athletics keeps records for one and it is contested at a handful of meets, but the heptathlon, not the decathlon, remains the championship event for women at the Olympics and World Championships.
