[01]What Is a Good 200m Time?

What counts as a good 200m, by level

Middle school and developing high school

Boys dropping into the mid 25s and girls into the high 27s are progressing well early on. At this level the curve is usually the weak point, most young sprinters run it stiff and upright. Learning to lean and run the bend relaxed takes off more time here than any amount of extra conditioning.

High school varsity

A good varsity 200 sits around 22.8 for boys and 26.0 for girls, with the low 22s and mid 25s scoring at championship meets. The athletes who break through usually have the speed already and finally learn to relax the back half instead of pressing through the last 50.

College and elite

College men run low 21s and faster, women low 24s and down. Elite is around 20.3 for men and 22.6 for women. At this level the second 100 is barely slower than the first, which is the whole skill of the event.

A 200 time hides where it was lost: the curve, the transition, or the fade. Film your race from the side, the AI flags where your mechanics break down and whether the curve or the back half is costing you, so you train the part that actually moves the time.

What Is a Good 200m Time? FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

What is a good 200m time for a high schooler?
Around 22.8 seconds for boys and 26.0 for girls is a solid varsity time. The low 22s and mid 25s score at championship meets.
Why is my 200m slower than double my 100m?
It should be. The 200 adds a curve and a fatigue component, so a good 200 is more than twice the 100, not exactly double. The gap shrinks as your speed endurance improves.
Is a sub-22 200m good?
Yes, sub-22 for boys is a strong, recruitable mark. Sub-25 for girls is the rough equivalent. Both are above the typical varsity level.
