[01]Average 100m Time for High School Girls

What the girls' numbers actually show

Freshman year is the noisiest year

A freshman girls' 100m field can span three full seconds. Some athletes arrive from club track with four years of starts behind them. Others are running their first timed race in spikes. A 14.2 in September and a 13.4 in May is a normal freshman season, and neither number predicts much about senior year. The wider by-age picture, youth through masters, sits in the 100m benchmarks by age and level.

Your state's cutoff is the number that matters

Massachusetts set a published 2025 state-meet auto standard of 13.19 for its largest division and 13.52 for its smallest. At the 2025 Texas 6A state final, eighth place ran 11.68. Both are called making state. Find your own association's published mark before you decide whether yours is good. Field events publish their cutoffs the same way, and the long jump ranges for high school girls show how far they move by state.

The improvement curve flattens earlier for girls

Most of the growth-driven speed a girl gets shows up by 15 or 16. After that, gains come from training rather than development, which roughly tracks why the ranges above show only a tenth or two between junior and senior year rather than a full second. That is not a plateau to panic about. It just means the work has to get more specific. The same four-year shape shows up over barriers in the 100m hurdle marks for high school girls.

High school girls 100m benchmarks

Every row is a range and every range is labeled by what it represents. Grade-by-grade splits are our own estimate built from the varsity range and typical development, since nobody publishes a grade-by-grade dataset for girls. The state and national rows below them are sourced results.

Sources: MIAA 2025 published state-meet qualifying standards, 2025 UIL Texas 6A state meet results, 2025 New Balance Nationals Outdoor results, Wikipedia's List of United States high school national records in track and field. Grade-by-grade splits above are our estimate, not a published dataset. The national 100m record is genuinely split in two: Shawnti Jackson's 10.89 (2023) is the fastest 100m ever run by a US high schooler, but it came at an elite invitational outside NFHS-sanctioned competition, so it counts as a Track & Field News national record rather than an NFHS one. The record recognized within NFHS-sanctioned state-championship meets belongs to Mia Brahe-Pedersen at 11.00 (2023). Candace Hill held the all-competition mark at 10.98 from 2015, also run outside the NFHS season, until Jackson broke it in 2023. All marks wind-legal.

Average 100m Time for High School Girls FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

What is a good 100m time for a high school girl?
Under 13.0 is good almost anywhere and will score at a league meet. Under 12.5 makes you a state-meet contender in most states. Under 12.0 is national-class and gets college coaches replying.
What is the average 100m time for a high school girl?
Roughly 13.0 to 14.0 for girls who actually compete in the event. Freshmen sit at the slow end of that and seniors at the fast end, though the four-year improvement is usually under a second.
Is 13 seconds a good 100m time for a girl?
Yes. A 13.0 flat is a solid varsity time, competitive at most dual and league meets, and close to the published state-meet standard in several states. It is short of a state final in the deeper states.
What 100m time do high school girls need for college?
Roughly 12.0 to 12.4 opens mid-major D1 conversations, and D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO programs recruit well into the 12.5 to 13.0 range. Power-conference programs generally want sub-11.9.
What is the national high school 100m record for girls?
It depends which record you mean, and the sport genuinely has two answers. Shawnti Jackson ran 10.89 at a June 2023 elite invitational, the fastest 100m any US high schooler has run, but that meet was not NFHS-sanctioned, so it stands as the Track & Field News national mark rather than the NFHS record. The NFHS record, set at an official state championship, is Mia Brahe-Pedersen's 11.00 from the 2023 Oregon final. Candace Hill's 10.98 from 2015 was the previous all-competition best, also run outside the NFHS season, until Jackson broke it. A separate 10.94 sometimes cited for Briana Williams was run for Jamaica at the Jamaican Championships and never entered the US high school picture at all.
