What the +2.0 limit actually does

It is a records rule, not a results rule

World Athletics will not ratify a sprint mark if the wind measured in the direction of running averages more than 2 metres per second. The race itself is untouched. Places, points and medals all stand. The mark just cannot become a record, and it will not count toward most entry standards. Headwinds hurt more than tailwinds help

Drag rises with the square of the relative air speed, so the arithmetic is lopsided. For a 10.50 s athlete the model puts a +2.0 tailwind at about 0.11 s of help and a -2.0 headwind at about 0.13 s of cost. Sprinters have always said this, and the numbers agree with them. Altitude gets a pass that wind does not

The same physics that makes a tailwind fast makes thin air fast. Mureika puts 1000 m of altitude at roughly 0.03 s in the 100m and 2000 m at about 0.06 s. Altitude-assisted marks are still eligible for records. Wind-assisted marks are not. That inconsistency lives in the rules, not in your reading of them. How to convert a 100m time for wind

This uses the Mureika sea-level correction, which collapses to a single expression and matches Linthorne's field measurements. It is a model estimate, not an official adjustment.

  1. 01

    Check the reading belongs to a 100m

    The gauge runs for 10 seconds from the flash of the starter's gun, sits beside lane 1 fifty metres from the finish, 1.22 m high and within 2 m of the track. The 100m and 110m hurdles use a 13 second window instead, so hurdle readings are not interchangeable with flat sprint readings.

    Note that the gauge rounds against the athlete

    World Athletics rounds the reading up in the positive direction. A true +2.03 m/s is recorded as +2.1 and the mark is wind-aided. A true -2.03 is recorded as -2.0. That rule has cost real athletes real records.

    Find your row and your speed band

    Read the adjustment for the wind you had against the time band you actually run. A 12.50 s athlete gains more from the same tailwind than a 10.50 s athlete, because they spend longer inside it.

    Add the adjustment to your time

    The result is the still-air, sea-level equivalent. A 10.90 run into a +2.0 tailwind converts to about 11.01. A 12.60 run into a -2.0 headwind converts to about 12.41.

    Label it as an estimate and keep the raw mark

    No governing body converts marks for wind. World Athletics either ratifies a performance or refuses it. If you publish a converted time anywhere, publish the raw time and the gauge reading beside it.

What is the legal wind limit for the 100m?
+2.0 m/s. A reading of +2.1 makes the mark wind-aided, and World Athletics will not ratify it as a record. The rule applies to events up to and including 200m, and to the long jump and triple jump.
How much time does a 2 m/s tailwind save in the 100m?
Roughly 0.10 to 0.12 s for world class sprinters. Linthorne measured 0.10 plus or minus 0.01 s for men and 0.12 plus or minus 0.02 s for women. Slower athletes gain slightly more because they are exposed to the wind for longer.
Do wind-aided times count?
For the race, yes. You keep the place, the points and the medal. For records and for most entry standards, no. Nothing in the rules erases the performance, it just cannot be ratified.
Is there an official 100m wind conversion?
No. World Athletics, the NCAA and the NFHS all publish marks as run, with the gauge reading attached. Every conversion you see, including this one, is a model estimate produced outside the governing bodies.
