What the 12-year-old numbers actually show

Boys and girls are still level

Across the 2024 Junior Olympic 11-12 finals the boy-girl difference was about 2 percent. By the 15-16 division it is closer to 7 percent. Middle school coaches see the same thing on their own tracks: the quickest 12-year-old in the building is often a girl, and nobody finds that odd until high school arrives.

Middle school is where the timing gets honest

Sixth and seventh grade meets are the first place many kids meet a real starting gun, a lane assignment, and in some districts an electronic clock. Times often look worse than the summer stopwatch numbers a parent remembers. That is the timing method changing, not the kid slowing down. Field events run into the same thing, which the long jump numbers for a 13-year-old spell out.

Growth spurts scramble the order

A 12-year-old who is six inches taller than his classmates has an obvious advantage and a temporary one. Pay attention to the small kids who are still hanging on. When they grow, they usually keep the mechanics they were forced to develop, and they start passing the early bloomers around fifteen. Height matters less at the top than it looks from a middle school track, as the heights of elite sprinters show.

Fix the mechanics before adding the mileage

Twelve is a good age to sort out an arm swing that crosses the body or a heel that kicks up behind the hip. Neither costs anything to change now and both get expensive later. Record one 60m run from the side and the app tells you which one is happening.

Typical and school-team rows are estimated bands, not measured medians, built around kids who are usually hand timed; the USATF rows are published, automatically timed results from real association and national finals. The 2024 girls' 11-12 national final was also wind-aided at 2.4 m/s, over the legal limit.

Average 100m Time for a 12-Year-Old FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

What is a good 100m time for a 12-year-old?
Under 14 seconds is good for a 12-year-old on a school team, and under 13 usually makes you the quickest kid in the building. The top of the country is a different world. The 2024 USATF 11-12 national final ran 11.70 to 12.32 for boys and 11.94 to 12.78 for girls.
Is a 12-year-old girl as fast as a 12-year-old boy?
Close enough that it barely matters yet. The 2024 national 11-12 finals were separated by 0.24 seconds at the winner and by well under a second through the rest of the field. Mixed heats at twelve are genuinely competitive, which stops being true within about two years.
What is a good 100m time for a 12-year-old girl?
Around 14 to 14.5 seconds is a solid school-team time, and under 13.5 will win most middle school meets. Girls placing top five at a USATF association 11-12 final in 2024 ran anywhere from about 12.8 to 15.2, and that spread is not about the athletes. It is about how deep the association happens to be.
Should a 12-year-old be doing sprint training?
Some, not much. Short accelerations, a little technique work, and a lot of playing other sports builds a better 15-year-old than a structured sprint program does. The athletes who peak at twelve are often the ones who trained like sixteen-year-olds.
