[01]What Is a Good 400m Time?

What counts as a good 400m, by level

Middle school and developing high school

Boys breaking 55 and girls breaking 62 are doing well early. Most young 400 runners make the same mistake, they go out far too hard and crawl home. Learning to run an even, controlled first 200 takes off more time at this level than any single workout.

High school varsity

A good varsity 400 is around 50.5 for boys and 58 for girls, with the high 40s and mid 50s scoring at the championship level. The athletes who break through have usually built the speed endurance to hold form through the last 100 instead of tying up.

College and elite

College men run sub-48 and women sub-55 to score, with elite around 45.5 for men and 51 for women. At that level the split differential is tiny and the finish is controlled, which is the entire art of the 400.

The 400 is decided where your form breaks, and most athletes never film a fatigued rep. Upload one, the AI shows exactly which mechanic falls apart first in the last 100, so you can train the breakdown instead of just running more 400s.

What Is a Good 400m Time? FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

What is a good 400m time for a high schooler?
Around 50.5 seconds for boys and 58 for girls is a solid varsity time. The high 40s and mid 50s score at championship meets.
How do I stop dying at the end of the 400?
Pace the first 200 around 1.5 to 2 seconds slower than your open 200 best, and build speed endurance so the back half holds together. Most fades come from going out too hard.
Is a sub-50 400m good?
Yes. Sub-50 for boys is a strong, recruitable mark, and sub-57 for girls is the rough equivalent. Both are above the typical varsity runner.
