[01]Average 100m Time for a 14-Year-Old

What fourteen looks like on a high school team

Freshman year is a level change, not an age change

The 100m field goes from one grade to four grades at once. A time that won middle school meets can finish sixth in a JV heat. That is not evidence anything went wrong. Most varsity sprinters were nowhere near varsity as freshmen and were still varsity by junior year. The same step change hits the field events, where a 14-year-old's long jump is suddenly measured against seniors.

The girls' numbers are their own thing

Freshman girls in Texas in 2025 ran 11.71 for tenth in the state and 12.71 for hundredth. In Ohio the same two positions were 12.45 and 13.37. Girls' 100m marks compress harder than boys' at this age, so a tenth of a second moves you further up a girls' list than a boys' list. The girls' four-year curve is broken out in the high school girls' ranges.

What actually earns varsity at fourteen

Roughly 11.6 to 12.3 for a boy and 12.8 to 13.6 for a girl gets a ninth grader into a varsity lineup at most schools. At a large program in Texas or Florida, add three or four tenths to both. The number that decides it is whatever your own team's fourth-fastest sprinter runs. Four-year context for that number is in the high school boys' 100m ladder.

Freshman sprinters lose most of their time in the first 20 meters, standing up too early out of the start. Film a start from the side and the app shows you the exact frame where you break posture, plus what to do about it.

100m benchmarks for 14-year-olds and high school freshmen

The freshman ranking rows are taken from published 2025 state lists and are automatically timed all-conditions marks, so wind-aided marks are mixed in with legal ones. That matters most on the 'fastest freshmen' row below: the quickest marks each spring are frequently wind-aided, and on the girls' side the fast end of that range leans on a single wind-legal mark, with the truly fastest marks aided. The typical and squad rows are estimated bands, not measured medians.

Average 100m Time for a 14-Year-Old FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

What is a good 100m time for a 14-year-old?
Boys around 12.0 to 12.6 and girls around 13.0 to 13.6 is good for fourteen. Under 11.6 for a boy or under 12.8 for a girl at that age is genuinely fast and will put you on a state freshman ranking list.
What is a good 100m time for a 14-year-old girl?
Anything under 13.5 is strong. Ranking inside the top 100 freshman girls in a large state in 2025 took roughly 12.71 in Texas or 13.37 in Ohio, which shows how much the answer depends on where you happen to live.
Is 13 seconds good for a 14-year-old boy?
It is respectable and it is usually not varsity. A 13.0 at fourteen normally means the mechanics are fine and the strength has not arrived yet. Boys who run 13.0 as freshmen commonly run 11.8 to 12.2 by senior year on ordinary training.
How fast are the fastest 14-year-olds?
Freshman boys at the top of the national list run about 10.1 to 10.7 and freshman girls about 11.5 to 11.8, though several of the quickest marks each spring turn out to be wind-aided. Those athletes are outliers by a wide margin, not a target.
