[01]100m vs 200m

How the two compare

What the 100 demands

The 100 is decided by your start, your drive phase, and your top-end speed, with no curve and no real pacing. It rewards pure power and reaction, and a great 100 runner is often a fast-twitch specialist who fades if the race runs long.

What the 200 demands

The 200 adds a curve and a speed-endurance component, so it favors sprinters who can carry speed and relax through the back half. A strong 200 runner often has good top speed plus the engine to hold it past 100 meters.

Which is your event

If you have a blazing start but tie up late, the 100 is likely your race. If you feel strong through the turn and finish well, the 200 may be your event. Many sprinters double, but your stronger event is the one where you fade the least.

100m vs 200m FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

What is the difference between the 100m and 200m?
The 100 is pure acceleration and top speed with no curve; the 200 adds a bend and a speed-endurance component, rewarding sprinters who can hold speed.
Is the 200m just two 100s?
No. The 200 adds a curve and fatigue, so it runs more than twice the 100, and it rewards different strengths.
Should I run the 100 or the 200?
Run the one where you fade the least. A blazing start that ties up late points to the 100; a strong, relaxed back half points to the 200.
