What it takes to get recruited at D1

Top-tier D1 (SEC, Pac-12, ACC, Big Ten)

These programs recruit state champions and national qualifiers. Boys: sub-10.5 100m, sub-21.0 200m, sub-46.5 400m, 24+ feet long jump, 7+ feet high jump, 17+ feet pole vault, 65+ feet shot put. Girls: sub-11.7, sub-23.5, sub-53.5, 20+ feet, 6+ feet, 14+ feet, 47+ feet.

Mid-tier D1

Solid HS varsity marks: 10.7-11.0 100m boys, 21.5-22.0 200m, 48.5-49.5 400m, 22-24 ft long jump, 6'4"-6'8" high jump. Girls equivalents: 12.0-12.4, 24.5-25.0, 56.5-58.0, 18-19 ft, 5'4"-5'8".

Walk-on standards

Often 0.5-1.0 seconds slower than recruited standards. Walk-on opportunities exist at most D1 programs for athletes who hit varsity-state-meet standards.

What 100m time do I need for D1?
Boys: sub-10.5 for top D1, sub-10.8 for mid D1, sub-11.0 for walk-on. Girls: sub-11.7 for top D1, sub-12.2 for mid D1, sub-12.5 for walk-on.
Do D1 schools recruit walk-ons?
Yes. Most D1 programs carry 5-15 walk-ons. Walk-on standards are typically 0.5-1.0 seconds slower than recruited standards.
When do D1 coaches start recruiting?
Active outreach begins junior year (after September 1 per NCAA rules) for most non-elite athletes. Elite athletes get attention as early as sophomore year via camps and meets.
Are D1 track scholarships full or partial?
Most D1 track scholarships are partial. Track has 12.6 men's scholarships and 18 women's scholarships per program, split across 30-50 athletes.
Should I go D1 if I can scholarship at D2?
