The short answer
NCAA Division II publishes provisional qualifying standards for every outdoor event. Hitting the standard puts you on the descending-order list, but it does not guarantee a trip: only the top 22 declared athletes per event are accepted to the championships. The men's 100m provisional is 10.43 and the women's is 11.71 for 2026.
Key takeaways
- D2 uses provisional standards (sea-level), then selects the top 22 declared per event
- Hitting the standard is the entry ticket, not a guaranteed spot in the meet
- Men's 100m provisional: 10.43; women's 100m provisional: 11.71 (2026)
- The qualifying window opened the third Thursday in February for 2026 outdoor
- Altitude and event conversions can adjust a mark up or down
- These are championship marks, not recruiting marks; they are far faster than what gets you recruited
What are the NCAA D2 outdoor qualifying standards?
NCAA Division II publishes a single set of provisional standards for outdoor track and field, listed at sea level. Run or throw the standard inside the qualifying window and your mark goes on the national descending-order list. Unlike Division I, which has no posted marks at all, D2 gives you a clear number to chase. But the standard is a threshold, not a guarantee. The committee accepts only the top 22 declared athletes per individual event (top 16 relay teams) to the championships.
In practice that means in a deep event, the standard gets you on the list but the 23rd-ranked athlete still stays home. In a thin event, almost everyone who hits the mark gets in. Treat the standard as the price of admission to the conversation, then race to climb the list. All marks below were last verified in 2026 against the NCAA's published Division II standards (updated October 2025).

Provisional, not automatic
D2 outdoor uses provisional standards only. Hitting the mark lists you; the top 22 declared athletes per event are then selected. The 4x100 relay standards are 40.68 (men) and 46.40 (women).

How D2 selection actually works
Once the window closes, every athlete who hit a provisional standard is ranked on the descending-order list. The Division II committee then takes the top 22 declared athletes in each individual event and the top 16 declared relay teams (one per institution). There is no regional preliminary meet the way Division I runs. D2 selects straight off the list and goes to one national championship.
"Declared" is doing real work in that sentence. Your coach has to enter you. Rank 19th but fail to declare and you are out, replaced by someone below you who did. This is why D2 coaches watch the list obsessively in the final week and why a late-season personal best can mean the difference between 25th and 18th.
Altitude, conversions, and what a legal mark requires
The standards are set at sea level, and D2 applies altitude adjustments to running events for marks run at elevation, using the current USTFCCCA conversion factors. The NCAA also allows specific event conversions, so a mile can convert to 1500 meters and a mile relay to a 4x400. Beyond that, the same hard rules apply to every division.
- FAT only: hand-timed marks are not accepted for qualifying.
- Sanctioned meets: at least two four-year schools must compete, each with 10-plus athletes per gender for a scoring meet.
- Window: 2026 D2 outdoor marks counted from the third Thursday in February through the second Sunday before the national championships.
- Wind gauges are required for the 100, 200, hurdles, and horizontal jumps.
- Proper facilities: the track must be certified, and marks must be set at the main venue.
Qualifying standards are not recruiting standards
Do not read this page as a recruiting chart. These provisional marks are what it takes to reach the national championship as an existing D2 athlete, and they are dramatically faster than what gets a high schooler recruited. A 10.43 100 meters is national-meet caliber; coaches recruit sprinters who are well off that. If you are a prospect, read D2 track recruiting standards. If you are already on a D2 roster trying to make nationals, this is your page.
The number on the chart is the floor
Hitting the provisional is necessary, not sufficient. In deep events the actual cutoff to make the 22-deep field is faster than the published standard. Plan to beat the standard, not just touch it.

How to use these marks if you are close
If you are within a few tenths or a few centimeters of a D2 provisional, you are in the zone where technique, not just training volume, decides it. A cleaner block start, a tighter hurdle trail leg, or a better penultimate step in the long jump is often worth more than another month of base work. Film a rep, find the leak, fix the phase, and the standard moves from aspiration to checkbox.
