The default is side-on, and here is why

For almost every running and jumping event, the best camera angle is side-on and perpendicular to the line of motion. That plane, called the sagittal view, is the one where knee drive, hip extension, posture, and stride length are all visible without foreshortening. Dartfish puts the rule plainly: capture the athlete laterally with the body perpendicular to the track, because a view taken without accurate perspective will always give incorrect calculations. Get off square and you distort every angle the analysis tries to measure.

CoachNow describes two standard angles for sports video: face-on, which shows balance and left-right symmetry, and down-the-line or side view, which they call the more critical angle if you only get one. Look at the lane or runway lines on your screen. If they run flat across the frame instead of fanning toward a corner, your camera is square to the motion and your angles will measure true.

Sprints and hurdles

Film both side-on. For a sprint, square the camera to the lane and frame the phase you want: the blocks out to about 15 meters for a start, or a single full stride cycle for max velocity. For hurdles, set the camera level with a hurdle, side-on, so you can watch the lead-leg snap, the trail-leg clearance, and where the lead foot touches down relative to the hurdle. Both events reward a perpendicular view because the action is almost entirely in the vertical-and-forward plane the side camera reads best.

Long jump and triple jump

Film side-on to the runway with the board and the pit both in frame. The last three to four strides and the instant of takeoff are where the jump is won or lost, so do not cut them off. Dartfish recommends filming jumps from further back with a wider, panoramic view so the whole approach fits. For triple jump, back up even more: you need the hop, the step, and the jump all visible to judge the rhythm and where the athlete loses or holds horizontal speed.

High jump

High jump is the first event where pure side-on is not ideal, because the athlete curves into the bar and rotates over it. Angle the camera toward the bar from the side so you can see the approach curve, the plant, the back arch, and the bar clearance. A common coaching cue from high jump analysis is that a long last step puts the brakes on the jump, and a dropping chin pulls the hips down onto the bar. You can only see those faults if the angle captures the arch over the bar, not just the run-in.

Pole vault

The vault rewards two angles because so much happens at the plant. Set one camera near the box to catch the plant timing and takeoff, the moment the pole hits the back of the box and the athlete leaves the ground. A side view captures the swing-up and the bar clearance. If you can only film one angle, the side view that includes the last few approach strides and the plant tells you the most, since plant timing drives everything that follows. The plant is the moment

Most vault and jump errors trace back to the takeoff. If your angle or framing misses the instant the foot leaves the ground or the pole hits the box, the clip cannot tell you why the jump failed.

Throws: where the rules change

Relays: film the exchange zone side-on

Relays add a wrinkle: the handoff. Film the exchange side-on, square to the lane, centered on the 20-meter exchange zone so you can see both runners, the timing of the outgoing runner's go-mark, the closing speed of the incoming runner, and whether the baton is passed in the legal zone. The same perpendicular principle applies, you just frame the zone rather than a single athlete. A side angle shows whether the outgoing runner left too early or too late, which is where most relay time is won or lost.

When to use two angles

Most events only need one good side-on angle. Add a second camera when a single plane cannot tell the whole story: a pole vault, where a box angle adds plant timing the side view cannot show, or a sprint, where one camera on acceleration and another on max velocity captures two different phases.
