The short answer

The average 400m time for a 14-year-old is about 62 seconds for boys and 69 for girls, among athletes who race it. A good freshman time is under 58 for boys and 65 for girls. Strong 14-year-olds run 52.5 to 54.5 and 59 to 61, and the national class is close to 50 and 57.

Key takeaways

  • Typical racing 14-year-olds: 59 to 65 for boys, 66 to 72 for girls
  • A freshman under 55 or a freshman girl under 61 is usually on the varsity 4x400 already
  • The first 400 a 14-year-old ever races is usually 66 to 82 seconds
  • Eighth graders and freshmen are both 14 and race very different fields
  • The typical boy drops about 2.5 seconds a year from here to 16

What is the average 400m time for a 14-year-old?

At 14 the 400 stops being a middle school event and becomes the race high school coaches use to find quarter-milers. An eighth grader runs it at a middle school meet in the spring and at a USATF 13-14 meet in the summer. A freshman runs it in a junior varsity heat, then gets handed a baton on the 4x400 the day the coach sees a good time. Among 14-year-olds who race, the typical boy runs about 62 seconds and the typical girl about 69.

The freshman year also introduces real timing. Middle school meets are often hand-timed, which flatters by a quarter second; high school meets use fully automatic timing. All the numbers below are FAT or corrected to it.

Ages 13, 14 and 15 side by side

The 400 falls about three seconds a year at the typical level for boys and two for girls through this stretch. The top of the boys' field is moving faster than that, because the freshmen who join a high school program get a full season of 400-specific training that no middle school provides.

The outlier at the top

Quincy Wilson ran 44.20 for 400m in July 2024 at age 16, then 44.10 a year later, the fastest 400 ever by an under-18 athlete. At 14 he was already under 48 (47.59 at the 2022 AAU Junior Olympics). That is the ceiling of this age group; the national class in the table is what the best two dozen 14-year-olds in a normal year run.

What is a good 400m time for a 14-year-old boy?

Under 58 is good and it scores in freshman and JV meets. Under 54.5 is strong and gets a freshman a varsity relay leg at most schools. The national class is 49.5 to 51.5. For an eighth grader the same numbers mean more: a 55-second 400 at a middle school meet is a state-level performance almost everywhere. The typical band, 59 to 65, is where most freshmen start, and almost all of them are losing four or five seconds to pacing rather than fitness.

What is a good 400m time for a 14-year-old girl?

Under 65 is good for a 14-year-old girl and puts her in varsity 4x400 conversation. Under 61 is strong, and in many states it is within three seconds of a state qualifying time by sophomore year. The national class is 56 to 58. A girl running 66 to 72 is typical for a racing 14-year-old, and the most common fault at that level is a first 200 run at 200m race pace.

How these numbers were built

  1. Population. Athletes who raced a timed 400m at a school, club or USATF meet, drawn from Athletic.net and MileSplit season lists. A child who has never raced is usually slower than the first-race row.
  2. Typical band. The middle 50 percent of that population for the age, rounded to the nearest second (half second at the top).
  3. Good, strong, national class. Roughly the top 25 percent, top 5 percent and top 0.5 percent of the age. National class is anchored to USATF Junior Olympic final results for the division that contains the age.
  4. Timing. Fully automatic timing where it exists. Hand times were rounded up by 0.24 seconds, the standard correction.
  5. Cross-check. Each band was checked against the same athletes' 200m marks; a 400m time should be roughly 2.15 to 2.3 times the 200m time at these ages.

Moving from typical to good at 14

  • Learn the split. A 62-second runner should pass 200m in about 30. Freshmen who go through in 27 run 66.
  • Build the 300. Two or three sessions of 300m repeats at goal pace, with long rests, over a season is worth three seconds.
  • Strength endurance. Hill sprints and 150m runs at the end of practice teach the legs to hold form when the lactate arrives.
  • Watch the last 100 on video. The shortening stride, the crossing arms and the dropping hips show up on a single side-on clip, and they are the difference between 62 and 58.
