[01]Men's Shot Put Weight

The adult men's shot, level by level

16 lb is the number from college onward

The NCAA sets the men's shot at a 7.26 kg minimum for Division I, Division II and Division III, indoors and outdoors. The NAIA adopts the NCAA rulebook. USATF open competition, the World Championships and the Olympic Games use the same 7.26 kg ball. Once a man leaves high school, the implement stops moving. Every division's spec is laid out in college shot put weight.

American high school boys are the exception

NFHS Rule 6-10-2 puts high school boys on a 5.443 kg shot, 12 lb, which exists almost nowhere else in the world. International boys step through 5 kg at U18 and 6 kg at U20 before they ever touch 7.26. An American boy skips both steps and jumps 33 percent in one September. The full age chart sits in shot put weight by age. What he actually throws with that 12 lb ball is in average shot put distance for high school.

The masters ladder starts at 50, not at 35

Masters men stay on 7.26 kg from M35 through M49. At 50 the shot drops to 6 kg, at 60 to 5 kg, at 70 to 4 kg, and at 80 to 3 kg. A best set at 49 and one set at 50 are not the same event. The women's ladder is in girls shot put weight.

These are legal specifications, not estimates. The 16 lb figure is the one to remember, since it covers everything from a college freshman to an Olympic final.

The masters ladder, M50-M59 through M80 and over, is confirmed against two current, dated sources that agree exactly: a USATF track and field specifications sheet based on the 2024 Competition Rules, unchanged for 2026, and World Masters Athletics' 2026 Competition and Technical Rules, amended 5 December 2025, Implement Specifications table. Junior college meets are run at 7.26 kg according to meet officials and equipment suppliers, but the NJCAA handbook itself was not checked directly, so that one is reported rather than verified. Pound figures are conversions of the metric rule, which is the governing number.

Men's Shot Put Weight FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

How much does a men's shot put weigh?
7.26 kg, which is 16 lb. That weight covers the NCAA, the NAIA, USATF open competition, the World Championships and the Olympics. American high school boys are the one large group throwing something else, at 12 lb.
Is 16 lb exactly 7.26 kg?
Not quite. Sixteen pounds is 7.257 kg, and the rule is written as a 7.260 kg minimum, so a legal men's shot is a few grams heavier than a true 16 pounds. Nobody has ever noticed the difference in a throw, but the metric number is the one the rulebook enforces.
What weight shot put do masters men throw?
7.26 kg through M49, 6 kg for M50-M59, 5 kg for M60-M69, 4 kg for M70-M79 and 3 kg from M80. Marks are only comparable inside a single band, because each step down is effectively a new event.
How much distance does the heavier shot cost?
Jacko Gill gives the cleanest illustration on record. On 5 December 2011 he threw 22.31 m with a 6 kg shot and 20.38 m with the 7.26 kg shot at the same meet, a gap of 1.93 m, about 6 ft 4 in, for 1.26 kg. The 12 lb to 16 lb jump is bigger again, and there is no reliable conversion factor between them.
