[01]Shot Put vs Discus

How the two compare

Shot put: power and the push

The shot is a heavy ball put, not thrown, from the neck with a powerful push off the legs and hips. The throw is short and the implement heavy, so strength and a fast hip drive carry the most weight, though technique still sets the ceiling.

Discus: spin and the glide

The discus is much lighter and is released with a fast, flat spin so it glides through the air. Distance comes from a clean release, aerodynamics, and a long, smooth pull as much as from strength, so technique matters even more than in the shot.

Why throwers do both

The events share the same ring, the same rotational footwork, and a lot of the same strength base, so they reinforce each other. A thrower who improves their balance and hip drive usually sees both marks climb.

[10]Common questions

Shot Put vs Discus FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

What is the difference between shot put and discus?
The shot put is a heavy ball pushed for a short, powerful throw; the discus is a light plate released with spin for a long, gliding throw. The discus rewards technique even more.
Do shot put and discus use the same technique?
They share rotational footwork and the same ring, but the shot is a push and the discus is a spinning release, so the finishes differ.
Should a thrower do both shot put and discus?
Most do. The events share footwork and a strength base, so training one tends to help the other.
