A shot put distance with no weight attached is a number that means nothing. High school boys throw 12 pounds and high school girls throw 4 kilograms, and those two marks sit on completely different scales. The ladder below runs from a first-year JV thrower to All-American, and it names the implement on every single row. Two states' published 2026 qualifying standards are in there as hard anchors, because those are among the very few real numbers any association actually prints.
NFHS Rule 6-10-2 sets a 5.443 kg minimum for boys and 4.0 kg for girls. A girl throws the Olympic implement from ninth grade, so her freshman mark and her senior mark and her college mark all sit on one scale. A boy's do not, because college moves him to 16 lb. For 2026, Utah's qualifying standards ran 39-02 to 48-07 for boys across six classifications and 30-04 to 34-04 for girls. Oregon's ran 12.95 m to 15.35 m for boys, which is 42-06 to 50-04, and 10.25 m to 11.14 m for girls, 33-08 to 36-07. Same year, two states, and the bar moves nearly ten feet.
No state association and no national body reports the average mark of a high school shot putter. The grade-level bands below are ours, built from published state results, and they are estimates.
