[01]What Is a Good Shot Put Throw?

What counts as a good shot put, by level

Middle school and developing high school

On the lighter youth and developing weights, boys around 30 to 40 feet and girls around 26 to 33 are off to a solid start. At this level the distance comes from learning the power position and using the legs and hips, not from the arm or the weight room.

High school varsity

Throwing the 12-pound boys' shot and the 4-kilogram girls' shot, a good varsity mark is around 50 feet for boys and 39 feet for girls, with 55 and 44 scoring at the championship level. The jump from JV to varsity is almost always faster hips, not a bigger bench.

College and elite

College men throw the 16-pound shot and women the 4-kilogram, with good marks around 55 to 60 feet for men and 45 to 50 for women. Elite is around 68 feet for men and 55 for women on those implements, a level built on years of technique and strength.
