The throwing sector is the marked wedge of ground, fanning out from the ring or runway, that a shot, discus, hammer, or javelin must land inside to count. Land outside the sector lines and the throw is a foul. Here is what the sector is and how it works.
The sector is a wedge marked by two lines spreading out from the throwing circle. The implement must land within those lines, on the inside edge or inside them, for the throw to be measured.
For the shot, discus, and hammer, the sector is about 34.92 degrees wide. The javelin uses a similar marked sector. The angle is the same for every thrower, so direction matters as much as distance.
Landing outside the sector lines is a foul, as is leaving the ring improperly or fouling the line. A huge throw that drifts outside the sector counts for nothing, which is why throwing down the middle matters.
