[01]Average Shot Put Distance by Age

How the average throw moves with age

Weight changes as athletes grow

Younger throwers use lighter implements, then step up to the 12-pound boys' and 4-kilogram girls' shots in high school. Average distances reflect both growing strength and the heavier implement, so compare only within the same weight.

Average is not the same as good

These are typical marks, not competitive ones. A good varsity throw is well above the age-18 average here, around 50 feet for boys and 39 for girls. The gap is faster hips and a better release, not just strength.

What moves you above average

Throwing in sequence, legs and hips first, and finishing tall with a high release. Many throwers stuck at average are arming the throw and leaving the big muscles out.

Average shows the ballpark. Film from the throwing side, the AI flags whether your hips fire or stall and measures your release, so you climb past the age average by fixing the real leak.

Average Shot Put Distance by Age FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

What is the average shot put distance by age?
Typical developing-thrower marks run from about 24 feet at age 12 to 46 feet for boys and 34 for girls by age 18, on the standard high school weights. Competitive marks are farther.
What is a good shot put throw for a 16 year old?
Above the age-16 average of roughly 42 feet for boys on the 12-pound shot and 31 feet for girls on the 4-kilogram. A good mark is closer to 48 and 37.
Why do shot put distances depend on the weight?
Because boys, girls, and age groups throw different implements. A distance only means something next to the weight thrown.
