[01]What Counts as a Legal Throw in Shot Put

Where legal puts actually get lost

The toe board is legal on the inside only

Bracing hard against the inner face of the stop board is exactly what it is there for, and TR 32.13 permits it. The top edge is not yours. World Athletics counts the top inside edge as part of the top, so a spike that rides up over the lip on the block is a foul even though you never left the ring.

The clock is 60 seconds

One minute from when your name is called, under the World Athletics field event table in TR 25.17 and under NFHS 6-4-3a. It starts before you pick up the shot. Chalking, taping and pacing behind the ring all burn it, and letting it run out is charged as an unsuccessful trial. Long jump runs the same one minute rule, listed among the ways to scratch in what is a foul in long jump.

The back half rule is not about which way you face

Glide and rotation both finish with the athlete facing the sector, so stepping forward is the reflex. Your first contact with the top of the rim or the ground outside has to be completely behind the white line drawn through the centre of the circle. First touch is what counts as leaving. The equivalent exit rule in the pit is explained in how the long jump is measured.

Watch the fouls you cannot feel

Nobody feels their hand drift behind the shoulder line or their foot brush the top of the toe board. Film one throw from behind the ring and AI flags the frame where the put stopped being legal.

The six checks for a legal put

Run these in order. They are the same checks the ring judge is running, in the same sequence.

  1. 01

    Start stationary inside the circle

You may enter from any direction, and you may touch the inside of the rim and the inner face of the toe board on the way in. Before the put begins, both feet must be still and in firm contact with the ground inside the circle. NFHS 6-4-3b makes failing to pause a foul.

  2. 02

Keep the shot at the neck

At the stance the shot touches or sits close to the neck or chin. The hand does not drop below that position during the action of putting, and the shot never travels behind the line of the shoulders. Cartwheeling techniques are banned outright by a note to TR 33.1.

  3. 03

Put with one hand, from the shoulder

One hand only. Slinging it, bringing it from behind the head or releasing with two hands is a failure under TR 32.14.1 and NFHS 6-4-2. This is the rule the whole event is named after.

  4. 04

Stay off the top of the rim and the toe board

Once you have stepped in and begun the put, touching the top of the circle rim, the ground outside, or any part of the stop board other than its inner face is a failure under TR 32.14.2 and TR 32.14.3. The top inside edge of each counts as the top.

  5. 05

    Land inside the sector

The sector is 34.92 degrees and the lines are out. If the shot touches the sector line or the ground outside it on first contact, the trial is dead no matter how far it travelled.

  6. 06

Wait for the landing, then leave from the back

Stay in the circle until the shot has touched the ground. Then your first contact with the top of the rim or the ground outside has to be completely behind the white line running through the centre of the circle.

What Counts as a Legal Throw in Shot Put FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

What makes a shot put throw illegal?
The most common calls are touching the top of the toe board or the ground outside the ring, letting the shot drop below or behind the shoulder line, landing on a sector line, leaving before the shot lands, and walking out the front half of the circle.
Can you touch the toe board in shot put?
The inner face, yes. That is what it exists for. Touching the top of it, or its top inside edge, is a foul under World Athletics TR 32.14.3. The distinction catches out more high school throwers than any other rule.
How long do you have to throw in shot put?
60 seconds from when your name is called, under both World Athletics and NFHS rules, as long as more than three competitors remain. Consecutive trials get two minutes. The clock covers chalking and set-up, not just the put itself.
Do you have to exit the back of the shot put circle?
Your first contact with the top of the rim or the ground outside has to be completely behind the line through the centre of the circle. You also have to wait until the shot has landed. Both are separate fouls if you get them wrong.
