How to read these high school discus marks

Boys 1.6 kg, girls 1 kg, and the plates are different sizes too

NFHS Rule 6-10-4 sets the boys' discus at a 1.6 kg minimum with a 209 to 211 mm diameter, and the girls' at 1.0 kg with a 180 to 182 mm diameter. The girls' plate is genuinely smaller in the hand, not just lighter. Every discus weight in the sport is collected in how much a discus weighs.

What the 2 kg discus costs a boy

The cleanest recorded illustration is Mykyta Nesterenko in 2008. Inside fifteen days he threw 77.50 m with a 1.5 kg discus, 70.13 m with a 1.75 kg, and 65.31 m with a 2 kg. Same athlete, same fitness, 40 feet between lightest and heaviest. High school boys make a smaller step, 1.6 to 2.0, in the same direction. The weights either side sit in high school discus weight.

The middle of this table is an estimate and should be read that way

No state association and no national body publishes the median mark of a high school discus thrower. What states publish is a qualifying standard, and even that is usually derived from past placings rather than from an average. The by-age version of this ladder is in average discus distance by age. Most high school discus throwers put the shot as well, and that ladder is in average shot put distance for high school.

High school discus distances by level

Boys throw the 1.6 kg discus and girls the 1 kg discus on every row unless a row says otherwise. Rows marked estimate are our own bands; the state, NCAA and record rows are published figures.

Average Discus Distance for High School FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

What is the average discus throw for a high school boy?
Our estimate for a senior on varsity is 125 to 150 feet with the 1.6 kg discus. That is a band we built, not a published average. For a published number, Utah's 2026 boys' qualifying standards ran 110-02 to 140-07 depending on classification.
How much does a high school discus weigh?
Boys throw a 1.6 kg minimum, 3.527 lb, with a 209 to 211 mm diameter. Girls throw a 1.0 kg minimum, 2.205 lb, with a 180 to 182 mm diameter. Both figures come from NFHS Rule 6-10-4.
How much distance do you lose switching to the 2 kg discus?
Enough that you should expect a real drop and plan for it. Mykyta Nesterenko threw 77.50 m with 1.5 kg and 65.31 m with 2 kg inside a fortnight in 2008, a 40 foot gap. The 1.6 to 2.0 step is smaller, but there is no reliable conversion factor, so ignore any chart that offers you one.
What discus distance qualifies for state?
It varies by state and classification. Utah's 2026 standards ran 110-02 to 140-07 for boys and 89-03 to 105-08 for girls. Oregon's ran 127-11 to 146-00 for boys and 101-09 to 121-10 for girls. Use your own association's published sheet.
