A vaulter carries a 4 to 5 m pole at sprint speed, holds body weight overhead while the pole bends, then rotates upside down and pulls through while it unbends. Extra body mass makes every one of those steps harder, which is why vaulters look leaner than high jumpers of the same height. A taller athlete reaches higher at the plant, so for the same takeoff position they can grip a little higher on the same pole, and grip height is what sets the ceiling on a vault. That is the honest advantage. The cost is that long levers rotate slowly through the swing, so tall vaulters who cannot generate a fast swing stall out below their grip.
