Heavy hip extension for the run and the takeoff

Back squat or trap-bar deadlift at 80 to 90 percent of one-rep max, 3 to 5 reps, 3 to 5 sets, twice a week in the off-season. The approach is a sprint and the takeoff is a single-leg jump into a plant, so the same qualities that build a 100m build both. Overhead and pulling strength, which no other jumper needs

Weighted pull-ups, legless rope climbs, and strict overhead press or push press. Sets of 3 to 6 with real load. The top hand carries the whole system through the swing, and a vaulter who cannot control body weight overhead will collapse the shoulder angle and lose the grip height they paid for. This is the block most vaulters skip.

Gymnastic strength holds the swing together

Hollow holds, ab wheel rollouts, straight-body swings on a high bar, and handstand work. It is trunk stiffness rather than trunk crunching. The swing fails when the middle folds, not when the abs are weak in a sit-up sense. The pattern you are supporting is described in the pole vault swing-up.

A bigger pull-up does not automatically become a bigger vault. Film one jump every four to six weeks and AI grades swing speed, shoulder angle at the plant, and how much of your grip height you convert. Those are the numbers that should move if the lifting is working.

What lifts are most important for pole vault?
Heavy squat or trap-bar deadlift for the run and takeoff, weighted pull-ups and overhead press for the top hand, and gymnastic trunk work so the swing holds together. If you only have time for three, take those three.
Should pole vaulters bench press?
A little. Bench is worth keeping for general upper body strength, but pulling and overhead pressing transfer more directly to what the top hand does on a bending pole. Vaulters who build a big bench and a heavy body usually give back more on the runway than they gain on the pole.
How many days a week should a vaulter lift?
Two heavy sessions a week suits most high school and college vaulters in season, with a third light or gymnastic-only day. Off-season can carry three. Keep the heavy work away from the day you are taking full-approach jumps.
Why do pole vaulters train differently from high jumpers?
High jump is almost entirely a takeoff event, so the program leans on approach speed and single-leg power. Vault adds an inverted gymnastics skill performed while holding body weight overhead, which means pulling and overhead strength that a high jumper can safely ignore.
