[01]What Is a Good Pole Vault Height?

What counts as a good vault, by level

Beginner and developing

Most vaulters clear 6 to 9 feet in their first season, and reaching 11 feet for boys or 8 feet 6 inches for girls is real progress. At this stage the gains come from a safe, repeatable takeoff and the confidence to commit, not from a bigger pole.

High school varsity

A good varsity height is around 14 feet for boys and 11 feet for girls, with 15 to 16 and 12 to 13 scoring at the championship level. Moving up here is about getting on bigger poles and a higher grip, which only comes from faster run-up speed and a cleaner swing.

College and elite

College men clear 16 feet 6 inches and up and women 13 feet and up to score, with elite around 18 feet 6 inches for men and 14 feet 6 for women. At this level the takeoff, swing, and turn are nearly perfect and the poles are long and stiff.

Height comes from takeoff and swing, and both are invisible from the runway. Film a vault, the AI grades your takeoff position, swing timing, and top-arm angle, and shows what is keeping you from a higher grip and a bigger pole, the two things that raise the bar.
