[01]How Deep Is a Pole Vault Pit?

Pole vault pit specifications

Pit depth

Modern competition pits are 24-26 inches deep (~60-65 cm) to absorb landings from 5-6+ m heights. Older or training pits may be 16-20 inches deep, sufficient for lower bar heights.

Pit width and length

Width: 16.5 ft minimum (NFHS, IAAF). Length: 20 ft minimum (extends back from the box). Most competition pits exceed these by 1-3 ft to give vaulters a margin of error.

Foam composition and modular construction

Pits use layered polyurethane foam of varying densities: softer top layer, denser bottom layer. The pit is assembled from 6-12 modular blocks held together with hook-and-loop fasteners or zippers. Industry standard manufacturers include UCS Spirit, Gill, and Soft-Foam Products.

Pit + landing zones

Where vaulters should land in the pit

Dahlman's pit-landing zones (1-7) measure how deep into the pit the vaulter lands. Beginners land shallow (zones 1-2); elite vaulters land deep (zones 4-7) which signals efficient pole-to-vertical energy transfer. AI form check measures your landing zone.

How Deep Is a Pole Vault Pit? FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

How deep is a pole vault pit?
16-26 inches (40-65 cm) deep. Modern competition pits are 24-26 inches; older training pits may be 16-20 inches.
How wide is a pole vault landing pit?
Minimum 16.5 ft (5 m) wide per NFHS and IAAF rules. Most competition pits are 16.5-18 ft wide.
Are pole vault pits safer than they used to be?
Significantly. 1960s-era pits used wood shavings or sawdust. Modern foam pits absorb 5-6 m landings safely; combined with mandatory helmet rules in some HS associations, the event is much safer.
What is the pole vault pit made of?
Layered high-density polyurethane foam in modular blocks. Soft top, dense bottom, vinyl outer cover.
Do beginner pole vaulters use the same pit as elite vaulters?
Same dimensions, often smaller. Beginner pits at training facilities may be 16-20 inches deep. Competition meets always use full-depth (24-26 inch) pits.
