[01]How Tall Are High Jumpers

What height actually does for a high jumper

Taller means a higher starting point

Your center of mass sits roughly at your navel, so a 1.93 m jumper begins the clearance about 7 cm higher than a 1.81 m jumper of the same build. That is free height and it is the only advantage stature reliably hands you. Seven centimeters is also smaller than the spread between a jumper's good day and a bad one. The heights that go with each level are in average high jump height by age.

Vertical power predicts more than stature

Approach speed over the last three steps, and the force a jumper puts into the ground in about 0.15 seconds, explain far more of the result than height does. That is why sprinters and basketball guards convert to high jump well. It is also why long-limbed athletes who cannot load a takeoff leg stall out around 2.00 m. Sprinters live with the same tradeoff, laid out in how tall sprinters are.

Short jumpers pay for it at the bar

A shorter athlete has to produce more height above their own head, so clearance shape matters more. Holm and Franklin Jacobs both cleared 59 cm over their own height, which is the joint record for that differential. Neither did it on raw power. Both had unusually clean flop mechanics at the top. What ordinary high schoolers clear, year by year, is in the high school boys' high jump ladder.

Height is not the ceiling

Your body height is fixed. Your approach speed and your shape over the bar are not. Film one clearance from the side and AI grades both against jumpers clearing the height above yours.

How Tall Are High Jumpers FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

How tall is the average elite high jumper?
There is no published study of it, so treat this as an informed range rather than a measured average: most men in a global final are listed between about 1.83 m and 1.98 m, or 6'0" to 6'6". Women usually sit between 1.75 m and 1.93 m, or 5'9" to 6'4". Both bands have working exceptions at either end.
Can you be a good high jumper if you are short?
Yes. Stefan Holm won the 2004 Olympic title at 1.81 m and jumped 2.40 m indoors. Franklin Jacobs cleared 2.32 m at 1.73 m tall. Each of them got 59 cm above their own height, which is still the record differential.
How tall is Javier Sotomayor?
1.93 m, or 6 ft 4 in, as listed on his Wikipedia and federation profiles. He set the 2.45 m world record in Salamanca on 27 July 1993 and no one has cleared it since.
Does height matter more than vertical jump in high jump?
No. Approach speed and takeoff force explain more of the result. Height buys you a higher starting center of mass, which is worth a few centimeters, not a few bar heights.
