[01]How Long Is a Pole Vault Pole?

Pole length, by vaulter level

Standard pole lengths and grip ranges

Poles are sold in 6-inch length increments: 11', 11'6", 12', 12'6", 13', etc. up to 17'1". Each pole has a 12-inch grip range (top hand 6 to 18 inches from the top), so a 14 ft pole's grip range spans 12'6" to 13'6".

Picking the right pole length

Grip height should land in the lower half of a pole's grip range at the start of a season. As you grip up, move to longer poles. Holding at the top of a pole's grip range means you have outgrown it.

Pole length ladder by level

Beginners: 11-12 ft. Developing HS: 12-13 ft. Varsity HS: 13-14 ft. State-class HS: 14-15 ft. College: 15-16 ft. Elite men: 16-17 ft. Elite women: 14-16 ft.

How Long Is a Pole Vault Pole? FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

How long is a typical high school pole vault pole?
13-14 ft (3.96-4.27 m) for varsity HS vaulters clearing 12-14 ft. Beginners use 11-12 ft poles.
What is the longest pole vault pole made?
17 ft 1 in (5.20 m). Used by elite men gripping above 16 ft. Custom longer poles exist but are not standard manufactured lengths.
Are pole vault poles different lengths for men and women?
Yes, but only because grip heights differ. The same manufacturer makes the same lengths; women typically use 14-16 ft poles, men use 15-17 ft.
How is pole vault pole length measured?
End to end, including the rubber tip at the base. Manufacturer-marked length matches grip-range calculations.
Do beginner pole vaulters need a long pole?
No. Beginners use 11-12 ft poles with a reach grip (gripping low) and short approach. Long poles require more skill and approach speed.
