[01]Average Discus Distance by Age

How the average throw moves with age

Technique carries the discus

A clean, fast spin off the index finger glides far, so well-coached younger throwers can beat stronger sloppy ones. Average distances climb with age, but a clean release moves an athlete up faster than the calendar does.

Average is not the same as good

These are typical marks, not competitive ones. A good varsity throw is well above the age-18 average here, around 150 feet for boys and 125 for girls. The gap is usually a cleaner release, not raw power.

What moves you above average

A balanced turn and a flat release that stops the disc from wobbling. Many throwers stuck at average are tumbling the discus and bleeding distance to the air.

Average shows the ballpark. Film from behind, the AI isolates the release frames and shows whether your plane and finger roll are clean, so you climb past the age average by fixing the wobble.

Average Discus Distance by Age FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

What is the average discus distance by age?
Typical developing-thrower marks run from about 70 feet at age 12 to 135 feet for boys and 110 for girls by age 18, on the standard high school weights. Competitive marks are farther.
What is a good discus throw for a 16 year old?
Above the age-16 average of roughly 120 feet for boys on the 1.6-kilogram discus and 100 for girls on the 1-kilogram. A good mark is closer to 140 and 120.
Does technique matter more than strength in discus?
Both matter, but a clean, flat release sets the ceiling. A wobbling throw loses real distance no matter how strong the thrower is.
