[01]What Is a Good Discus Throw?

What counts as a good discus, by level

Middle school and developing high school

On developing weights, boys around 90 to 120 feet and girls around 75 to 100 are progressing well. Early distance comes from a balanced turn and a flat, clean release off the index finger, not from muscling the throw.

High school varsity

Throwing the 1.6-kilogram boys' discus and the 1-kilogram girls' discus, a good varsity mark is around 150 feet for boys and 125 feet for girls, with 170 and 145 scoring at the championship level. A clean release that stops the discus from wobbling is often worth more than extra strength.

College and elite

College men throw the 2-kilogram discus and women the 1-kilogram, with good marks around 165 to 185 feet for men and 150 to 170 for women. Elite is around 205 feet for men and 180 for women on those implements.

Clean the release

Distance leaks in a release that lasts a few hundredths of a second. Film from behind, the AI isolates the release frames and shows whether your plane and finger roll are clean or sending the disc off-axis, which is where the easy distance hides.

What Is a Good Discus Throw? FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

What is a good discus throw for a high schooler?
On the 1.6-kilogram boys' discus, around 150 feet is a solid varsity mark, with 170 scoring at championships. For girls on the 1-kilogram discus, around 125 feet is solid and 145 is competitive.
What is a good discus distance for a beginner?
On developing weights, boys around 90 to 120 feet and girls around 75 to 100 is a reasonable start. A clean, flat release matters more than strength early on.
Does a clean release add discus distance?
Yes. A flat, fast spin off the index finger glides, while a wobble catches air and drops early. Cleaning up the release can add real distance with no extra strength.
