There is no such thing as the long jump qualifying distance, and that is the useful thing to know first. Illinois asked 3A boys for 6.80 m (22-4) to reach state in 2025. Utah asked 1A boys for 18-9. Both are real state qualifying standards, published the same spring. Above high school the idea changes shape again, because NCAA Division I publishes no mark at all and Florida high schools do not use marks for the first round of qualifying either. What athletes actually jump at each level is a separate table, in average long jump distance by age.
Most state associations publish one mark per classification and revise it every year or two off recent results. Iowa builds its standard from the last three years of third place marks. A 21-0 can be a comfortable qualifier in a small class and two feet short in the largest one, in the same state, on the same weekend. The marks high school girls typically jump against those cutoffs are in the high school girls' long jump ladder.
Florida advances the top four from each district to the region meet, then the top two from each region to state, and fills the rest with at-large bids off a season-long descending order list. There is no distance to hit anywhere in that process. You place, or you rank.
NCAA Division II and the NAIA publish fixed marks each season, so you can aim at a number. Division I does not. Entry runs off a regional descending order list feeding the East and West first round, which means the real cutoff is only known once entries close. Sprint entry works the same way, described in college 100m times by division.
