[01]Why You're Fouling in Long Jump

Four reasons you keep fouling

Approach length not measured

If you're scrubbing or stepping over by 1-3 feet inconsistently, your approach length isn't dialed in. Re-measure: mark stride 1, then sprint and mark where you actually take off. Adjust until takeoff lands on the board for 6 of 6 reps.

Last 3 strides changing

Approach is fine through stride 17, then the last 3 shorten or lengthen as you sight the board. The fix: practice the last 6 strides isolated, without a board, so they're locked regardless.

Eye line drops to board

Looking at the board late in the approach changes your stride length. Pick a spot 10 feet past the board to fix the eye line through takeoff.

Most foulers don't realize which of the four causes is theirs. Film 3 approach runs side-on, AI marks stride length on each, identifies which stride is varying. Fix the right cause, foul rate drops fast.

Why You're Fouling in Long Jump FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

How do I stop fouling in long jump?
Re-measure your approach (mark stride 1 from your actual takeoff point), isolate the last 3 strides as a separate drill, fix your eye line past the board.
Why are my long jump approaches inconsistent?
Usually the last 3 strides. Most jumpers run the first 14-17 strides automatically and then look for the board, which shortens or lengthens the last 3.
Should I shorten my long jump approach to avoid fouling?
Only if your speed is overrunning the board. Better to re-measure and lock the existing approach length.
