[01]Average 400m Hurdle Time by Age

How to read these 400m hurdle benchmarks

The height changes more often than you think

USATF runs the 400mH in its 15-16 and 17-18 divisions at 36 in for boys and 30 in for girls, the same as the open race. World Athletics is different: U18 boys race 84.0 cm, which is 33 in, which is why world U18 bests are listed separately at that height. Every barrier height in the sport sits in one table in hurdle height by event and age.

The race is thinly contested until college

Because the NFHS championship event is the 300, most American 400mH fields below college are small and self-selected. That makes any published average unreliable in a way a 100m average never is. The high school race and its own age ladder are covered in average 300m hurdle time by age, which is the page most US high schoolers actually want. Level by level, what counts as a good 400m hurdle time covers the same event from the other direction.

Masters is where the event changes shape

Masters men stay at 36 in through M49, drop to 33 in for M50-M59, and from M60 race a 300mH over 30 in barriers instead. Masters women race the 400mH at 30 in through W49, then move to the 300mH. Times across those boundaries are not comparable, and neither WMA nor USATF publishes an age-group average to lean on.

Grade your clearance at your real barrier

Takeoff distance and trail leg mechanics both change with the barrier height, so generic hurdle feedback is close to useless in this event. Film one clearance at the height you actually race and AI grades it against that specific standard.

Times in seconds, fully automatic. Rows marked estimate are our own bands built from published results, because no governing body publishes an average for this event. Everything else is a published standard, a championship result or a record.

Sources: USATF youth outdoor event schedule adapted from USATF Competition Rules 301 and 302; World Athletics list of world U18 bests, which lists the boys' 400mH at 84.0 cm; 2026 NCAA Division II Outdoor provisional standards; NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships results 2021 to 2025; 2025 World Athletics Championships entry standards; Wikipedia's list of US high school national records. Every row labelled estimate is our own band and is not published by any governing body. The masters age boundaries above were re-checked against World Masters Athletics' 2026 Competition and Technical Rules, amended 5 December 2025: its long-hurdles table gives men 400m at 36 in through M49, 400m at 33 in for M50-M59, then 300m at 30 in from M60, and women 400m at 30 in through W49, then 300m at 30 in from W50, matching the boundaries used here. That replaces the 2009 USATF-New England sheet an earlier draft leaned on.

Average 400m Hurdle Time by Age FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

What is the average 400m hurdle time by age?
There is no published average, because the event is thinly contested outside college. Our estimated bands run roughly 58 to 68 seconds for USATF 15-16 boys, 54 to 62 for 17-18 boys, and 53 to 56 for a Division III qualifier. Women sit roughly 8 to 12 seconds behind at each step.
How tall are the 400m hurdles by age group?
36 in for boys, open men and masters men through M49. 33 in for international U18 boys and for masters men M50-M59. 30 in for all women and girls. From M60 the men's race becomes a 300mH over 30 in barriers.
Is there a 400m hurdles for masters athletes?
Yes, up to a point. Masters men race it through M59 and masters women through W49. After that both switch to the 300 meter hurdles, so a 400mH personal best simply stops accumulating at that age boundary.
Why do 400m hurdle averages vary so much?
Small fields. Outside NCAA competition the race is often contested by a handful of athletes per meet, many of them 400 runners trying it once. That makes the spread enormous compared with a flat sprint at the same level.
