[01]High School Discus Weight

High school discus weight, level by level

Middle school is a local decision

NFHS writes rules for grades 9 through 12. Nobody writes a national middle school discus rule, so the weight comes from your state association, your league, or the meet director. In practice nearly everyone uses the 1 kg disc for boys and girls, which matches USATF's 11-12 and 13-14 divisions. Read the meet information before you buy anything. The shot put has the same gap in national coverage, covered in high school shot put weight.

The 1.6 to 2 kg jump is the real story

A senior who throws 170 feet with the 1.6 kg disc is not throwing 170 feet as a college freshman. The NCAA implement is 25% heavier. Coaches commonly budget a drop of roughly 15 to 20% in distance through that first season, narrowing as strength and timing catch up. Treat that as a planning rule of thumb, not a conversion factor. Shot putters face a comparable step in the same autumn, described in the college shot put step.

International U18 boys throw lighter than US high schoolers

World Athletics puts U18 men on 1.5 kg and U20 men on 1.75 kg. So a US high school junior on 1.6 kg is throwing heavier than a same-age athlete at a World U18 Championship and lighter than an American 18-year-old at a U20 meet. Marks across those three implements do not compare, and anyone quoting them side by side is comparing different events.

Same disc, different result

Find out where the distance is going

When a thrower moves up a weight, the throw usually breaks in the same spot. The left side gives out early and the disc leaves low and flat. Film one throw from behind the ring and AI shows you the frame where the block collapses, then gives you the drill that holds it.

High School Discus Weight FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

How heavy is a discus in high school?
1.6 kg, about 3.53 lb, for boys and 1 kg, about 2.20 lb, for girls. NFHS Rule 6-10-4 sets both. States that adopt the NFHS book use those weights at every level of competition, indoors and outdoors.
What weight discus do middle schoolers throw?
Usually 1 kg for both boys and girls. NFHS does not govern middle school, so the number comes from your state association, conference, or meet director. If the meet information doesn't state it, ask before you show up with the wrong disc.
What is the under 14 discus weight?
1 kg for boys and girls in USATF's 13-14 division. Boys don't move up until the 15-16 division, when the weight goes to 1.6 kg and stays there through age 18.
How much does a college discus weigh?
2 kg for men and 1 kg for women in the NCAA across all three divisions, and the same in the NAIA and NJCAA. Those match World Athletics senior specs, so a college mark sits on the same implement as a professional one.
