[01]Common Relay Exchange Mistakes

Five relay exchange mistakes

Outgoing runner leaves too early

Most common 4x100 mistake. Outgoing runner goes before the incoming runner hits the go-mark, then the incoming catches up at the zone line and forces a rushed pass. Fix: re-measure the go-mark for your actual closing speed.

Outgoing runner peeks back

Costs 0.1-0.2 seconds per exchange. The eye drop slows you down. Drill: blind handoffs at 80% speed, then 100%, until trust is automatic.

Late incoming call

The call ("Stick!" or "Hand!") needs to come early enough for the outgoing runner to react. A late call forces a sloppy pass. Drill: count steps from go-mark to call so the rhythm is automatic.

Common Relay Exchange Mistakes FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

Why does our relay team keep dropping the baton?
Almost always a hand position issue, the outgoing runner's hand is moving or in the wrong plane. Drill stationary handoffs first.
How do I time the go-mark for a 4x100 exchange?
Set the mark based on the incoming runner's actual closing 20m speed, not a default. Most teams use a tape mark and adjust by 1-3 feet across early practices.
Should you peek back during a relay exchange?
In the 4x100, no. Blind handoff, full speed forward. In the 4x400, yes, the exchange is visual and the incoming runner is fatigued.
