[01]What Is a Good Javelin Throw?

What counts as a good javelin, by level

Developing high school

On developing weights, boys around 100 to 140 feet and girls around 70 to 100 are off to a solid start. Early distance comes from a faster, controlled run-up and a firm block leg, not from throwing harder with the arm.

High school varsity

On the 800-gram boys' javelin and the 600-gram girls' javelin, a good varsity mark is around 170 feet for boys and 120 feet for girls, with 200 and 145 scoring at the championship level. Throwing over the top instead of around the arm is usually what makes the difference.

College and elite

College men throw the 800-gram javelin and women the 600-gram, with good marks around 190 to 215 feet for men and 145 to 170 for women. Elite is around 235 feet for men and 170 for women, built on speed, a violent block, and clean technique.

See where your throw loses speed

The difference between a short throw and a long one is usually the run-up and block, not the arm. Film from the side, the AI tracks your approach speed, whether your block leg holds, and your elbow position, and tells you which link is leaking distance.

What Is a Good Javelin Throw? FAQ

Common questions athletes and coaches ask about this topic.

What is a good javelin throw for a high schooler?
On the 800-gram boys' javelin, around 170 feet is a solid varsity mark, with 200 scoring at championships. For girls on the 600-gram javelin, around 120 feet is solid and 145 is competitive.
What is a good javelin distance for a beginner?
On developing weights, boys around 100 to 140 feet and girls around 70 to 100 is a reasonable start. Distance comes from the run-up and block, not the arm.
Is javelin about arm strength?
No. It is mostly run-up speed and how well your block leg transfers that speed into the throw. Throwing over the top, not around the arm, is what adds distance safely.
